Creative Neighborhoods
On The Grid
On The Grid is an inspired neighborhood guide, curated by creatives around the world.
On the Grid is a passion project I was encouraged to pursue during my time at Hyperakt. When the Brooklyn studio moved from Carroll Gardens to Gowanus, I sought to create a guide familiarizing ourselves with our new surroundings.
Invigorated by the result, invitations were extended to neighboring studios to document their own communities. Today, years later, the guide has gone international, with hundreds of neighborhoods curated by design studios from all around the world.
First Launch
On The Grid started as a guide to the Brooklyn neighborhood of Gowanus, spotlighting the neighborhood's best through stunning photography and a boldly stylized interface.
Design System
Opening to neighboring studios meant a design system was critical. The navy blue accent and bold line motif tied everything together, allowing contributors to select a stark background color of their choice.
Photography
One factor that sets On The Grid apart from other neighborhood guides is the stunning photography. Our images are captured by top creative minds from around the world.
Early Growth
On The Grid took off quickly as more and more studios were eager to participate. Months after Gowanus was launched, all five New York City boroughs were on the map. The interface scaled to support the project’s growing ambition.
International Presence
Today, On the Grid hosts comprehensive guides of over 100 of the world’s biggest cities thanks to the continued, generous contributions of creatives from around the globe.
